When homeowners ask whether a contractor is “licensed,” they usually mean: are they legit? Are they going to do this properly? That’s the right instinct, but licensing in Ontario’s renovation industry is more layered than a simple yes or no.
What Licensing Covers in Ontario Renovations
Ontario doesn’t have a single provincial licence for general contractors — but the trades that work within a renovation do require licensing. Electricians, plumbers, and HVAC technicians must be licensed by their respective governing bodies (ESA, TSSA, TECA). When these trades are licensed, their work is inspectable and insurable.
What this means practically: if your renovation involves electrical, plumbing, or HVAC work, the trades doing that work should be licensed — and you can ask for proof.
What You Still Need to Verify Separately
WSIB coverage
Workplace Safety and Insurance Board coverage protects you if a worker is injured on your property. Without it, you could be liable. Ask for a WSIB clearance certificate — a legitimate contractor will have one.
Liability insurance
This covers damage to your home during the project. Ask for the certificate of insurance and make sure the coverage is adequate for the scope of work.
Permits pulled in your name
Permits should be pulled in the homeowner’s name or with the homeowner’s knowledge. If a contractor pulls permits without disclosing it — or skips them entirely — the legal and financial exposure is yours.
What a Reputable Contractor Does With All of This
They make it easy for you to verify. WSIB certificate? Here it is. Liability insurance? Here’s the provider, call and confirm if you want. Licensed electrician on the job? Here’s their ticket number.
If any of this creates friction, that friction is telling you something.
We carry proper coverage and work with licensed trades on every project. Not because we have to — because it protects you, and that matters to us.
