Kitchen renovations can run anywhere from $15,000 to well over $80,000 depending on scope, materials, and what’s hiding behind the existing finishes. Most homeowners land somewhere in the middle — and want to get as close to the high end of the result as their budget allows.
Here’s how we approached a recent kitchen reno for a homeowner in Simcoe County who had a fixed number and a clear picture of what they wanted the kitchen to feel like.
What Made the Biggest Visual Difference
Cabinet fronts, not full cabinet replacement
The existing cabinet boxes were solid. Replacing them entirely would have added significant cost without meaningful benefit. We replaced the doors, drawers, and hardware — completely changing the look at a fraction of full cabinet replacement cost.
Countertop upgrade
Countertops have an outsized effect on how a kitchen feels. We went with a quartz surface that’s durable, low-maintenance, and looks exactly like what the homeowner wanted. Not marble. Not the most expensive option. The right option for the space.
Backsplash
A well-chosen tile backsplash can anchor the whole kitchen design. We used a simple subway layout — easy to keep clean, classic look, reasonable material cost — and kept the grout colour intentional rather than default.
What We Held Back On
The appliances were functional and relatively new — we kept them and designed the new elements around them. The layout stayed the same (moving plumbing and gas lines adds significant cost). The flooring was in good condition and matched the new look well enough to stay.
The Result
The kitchen looked like a completely different space — not because we changed everything, but because we changed the right things. The homeowner got the kitchen they wanted without the budget they were afraid they’d need.
A good kitchen renovation isn’t about doing everything. It’s about knowing which elements to change to get the result you’re actually after.
